Major Christian Centres beyond Europe in 1453

This map illustrates the five most important centres of Christianity outside Europe prior to the great age of discovery and expansion. Despite the rise of Islam, strong Christian churches remained in Armenia and Georgia; Ethiopia; Egypt, India and Persia. Back in “Christendom,” Europeans had very hazy ideas about these churches with which exploration was soon to bring them into contact.
