The 1480s and 1490s saw a major shift in the outlook of Europeans as a result of the discoveries and conquests of the Portuguese and Spanish crowns. Both powers adopted strategies for the propagation of the Christian faith and an important role was played by Catholic missionary orders such as the Dominicans, Jesuits, Franciscans and Augustinians. The map highlights a number of key events beginning in the 1480s and concluding in 1601. This is not an exhaustive list but it does give a sense of some of the more important figures and mission fields of the period. This was not an era of significant Protestant overseas missionary endeavour.
