The Roman Empire

This map shows the approximate frontiers of the Roman Empire in 395. The lines of defence, which have remained largely the same since the early second century, are Hadrian's Wall, the Rhine and Danube rivers, and the Sahara Desert. The boundaries to the East, constantly disputed with Persia, have always fluctuated a little more than the others. These lines of defence are now about to fail.
